What you'll find in Electronics
Electronics covers everything with a plug or a battery: smartphones, laptops and tablets, TVs and projectors, headphones and speakers, smart home devices, gaming consoles and wearables. It is also the category where prices swing more than anywhere else online. A flagship phone can lose a third of its price within months of launch, and the same TV can differ by hundreds of pounds between retailers in the same week.
Why? Release cycles and seasonal promotions. Manufacturers refresh their line-ups on a predictable rhythm, and retailers like Currys, Argos, John Lewis and Amazon clear last-generation stock aggressively. John Lewis famously price-matches, and communities like hotukdeals prove daily how much timing matters.
There is a safety net too. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods must be of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose — if a device is faulty, you have strong remedies against the retailer. And if you pay by credit card for anything over £100, Section 75 makes your card provider jointly liable, which is valuable protection on big-ticket tech.
Tradifox helps you put all of this together: we track when deals are genuinely good, explain how to compare properly, and point you to the guides that save real money.
Five rules for buying tech at the right price
Electronics rewards patient, informed shoppers. These five habits consistently beat impulse buying.
Check the price history first
A discount is only real compared to what the product actually sold for. Before buying, check the 90-day price history with a price tracker. Many 'was £999, now £699' offers were selling at £749 the whole time. Our price comparison guide shows you exactly how.
Buy against the release cycle
New iPhones land in autumn, which makes September–October the best time to buy last year's model. TVs are cheapest in late winter and spring, just before new panels ship. Knowing the calendar can save you 20–35% on identical hardware.
Compare the total cost, not the sticker
Add delivery, subtract bundled extras (gift cards, subscriptions, accessories) and factor in trade-in offers. A slightly pricier listing with a £100 trade-in bonus often wins.
Understand your warranty rights
The retailer is your first port of call under the Consumer Rights Act — not the manufacturer. A separate manufacturer warranty is a bonus on top, not a replacement for your statutory rights. Keep receipts and pay big purchases by credit card for Section 75 cover.
Consider certified refurbished
For laptops and phones, certified refurbished from the manufacturer or a reputable retailer typically saves 15–40% and comes with a warranty. Ideal for premium models where new prices sting.
When electronics prices drop
Electronics is the flagship Black Friday and Cyber Monday category — genuine lows appear on headphones, TVs and laptops if you know the real price history. Boxing Day sales follow quickly with retailers clearing Christmas stock, and January is traditionally strong for big-screen TVs. Back-to-school season in August and September brings reliable laptop and tablet deals. Between events, watch the model cadence: the best-value moment for almost any device is the month its successor is announced. Our Black Friday guide covers the November playbook in detail.
Electronics buying FAQ
When is the best time to buy electronics?
Around Black Friday and Cyber Monday for accessories and TVs, September–October for last-generation phones, and August–September for laptops. The single best trigger is a successor product being announced.
Are Black Friday electronics deals genuine?
Some are excellent, many are average. Check the 90-day price history before you commit — a real deal beats the recent typical price, not an inflated 'was' price.
New, open-box or refurbished — what should I choose?
New for the latest models on deep discount, certified refurbished for premium laptops and phones (15–40% savings with warranty), open-box only from retailers with full return rights.
